Yesterday, February 9, 2017 a video showing soldiers beating a disabled man in Onitsha, Anambra state because he wore camouflage clothes went viral and a couple of Nigerian celebrities have shared their dismay at the action of the military men.

In Nigeria, it is common knowledge that civilians do not wear clothes that resemble the official garb of the army. Anyone caught is usually ‘dealt with’ by soldiers. But the treatment meted out to this crippled man is just too much.

Actor Alex Ekubo writing via Instagram said the gross misuse of powers by the men in uniform has to stop. He even offered to clothe the man if wearing army colors is now a crime.

Oluwakaponeski a comedian called the soldiers involved “Ignorant morons.” Going further, he said our whole military is just garbage.

Musician, Tunde Ednut asked if the duty of soldiers has changed from protecting Nigerian citizens.

Meanwhile, The army has released a statement saying the soldiers involved in beating the man have been apprehended.

The Nigerian Army has released a statement condemining the actions of the soldiers.

Also, a philanthropist has offered to give the man N20, 000 if anyone helps to locate him.

This is a welcome development. These so called soldiers should used as an example so others can know that civilians are not to be treated like animals.
