When the news broke that the legendary Nigerian musician King Sunny Ade will be performing at the 2017 edition of the popular Coachella Festival many, including NAIJ.com Entertainment, were very excited.
Excited because, Coachella showcases popular and established musical artists, as well as emerging artists and reunited groups from all over the world. It is also one of the largest, most famous, and most profitable music festivals in the United States and all over the world. The 2016 festival sold 198,000 tickets and grossed $94 million.
Imagine KSA in all his glory performing with members of his band… Not only would this confirm that the world is finally recognizing Nigerian music, it would be a great achievement on KSA’s part. Widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of all time, King Sunny Ade is was inducted into the Hardrock Hall of Fame in 2016. He has also released a record 123 albums.
According to Pulse, KSA’s name made the initial event promotional flyer distributed across social media and widely reported across various news outlets. He was also added to their website, as more performers were announced. He was meant to perform a set either on Sunday, April 16, or on April 23.
Superstar, Beyonce, had earlier pulled out of the show due to her pregnancy with twins. She was replaced by Lady Gaga as a headliner as announced by the organizers, Goldenvoice and AEG Live. But the new event flyer shared by Lady Gaga is missing KSA’s name.
No explanation has been given as to why this happened but on the website, KSA’s name is also missing. Does this mean that this much expected performance has been cancelled? I’m sure more details will emerge in due time.
Other African artists have performed at the show in the past including The Young Fathers of Liberian and Scottish origin alongside South African DJ Black Coffee.
