The Big Brother Naija contestants were treated to a surprise visit by Actor turned politician Desmond Elliot.
Immediately he stepped into the house, one could see the excitement and joy on the faces of the housemates. They all ran to hug and welcome him into the house.
However, Desmond wasn’t alone. He came into the house with an official from the ONE Organization, an international campaigning and advocacy organization of more than 7 million people taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support policies and programs that are saving lives and improving futures.
They discussed with the housemates the work ONE was doing especially with women and girls as regards poverty alleviation. And since today was the International Women’s Day, their visit was apt. They also asked the housemates to name women who they feel have done a lot to further the cause of women in Nigeria.
Names like Dora Akunyili, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Oby Ezekwesili, Funmi Tejuoso, Funmilayo Ransome – Kuti and Bolanle Austen-Peters were mentioned.
Desmond also announced that himself and ONE organization have launched a new campaign titled #GirlsCount to help their cause in getting more African governments to spend more on girls education. Also, they announced a new task for the housemates.
The new task will see the housemates prepare a policy document showing while governments need to spend more on girl education. The winner will automatically become an ambassador for ONE, having the opportunity to travel allover Africa to help the organization convince people to do more for girls.
