Almost like an age old question, the functionality of a wedding sponsor is unknown. Many couples have successfully gotten married without a sponsor and many weddings have been successful just because of a sponsor.
In today's society when the word sponsor is mentioned what comes to mind is a money bag ready to part with a substantial amount for the success of a product, talent and in this case an event. What most fail to understand is the usefulness of the sponsor. Perhaps, it's why a lot of people keep asking, what really does a sponsor do in a Nigerian wedding?
Just before your inner voice screams "provides money," think of a master planner who makes sure all is set and well before, during and after the wedding.
NAIJ.com gives you two most important things done by a sponsor in a Nigerian wedding.
1. Show me the money
The truth is people are not going to come to your wedding loaded with cash just for you and your partner. Some might gift you a token but how else is it done? In Bauchi, Northern Nigeria for instance a sponsor (called uwar daki) is mostly a responsible, married woman who encourages her friends to donate free willingly for the couple.
She achieves this by distributing food stuff such as palm oil, bags of salt to friends who in return give out money to the husband. They also are in charge of keeping the money sprayed on the couple save.
2. Master planner
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming and while one can employ professionals to do it, there still needs to be someone who can keep tabs.
The last people who can keep tabs on the progress of the wedding is the couple. This is another area where the sponsor comes in. They take it upon themselves to keep everything in place. They track progress, follow up on all vendors. On wedding day, they organize food service and other things, all to make that day enjoyable for the couple.

Those who understand the use of wedding sponsor put time and effort into picking the most appropriate person for the role. Weddings are about vibrancy, happiness, love and celebrations but who makes sure to keep them that way? No one else but the wedding sponsor.
