Police Rescue ‘Bird Woman’ From Lagos Mob

There was chaos, Wednesday, in Ajegunle area of Lagos state after a 'bird' transformed into an old woman, with her confessing to being a witch.

The old woman who escaped lynching was reported to have confessed to the shocked crowd that she was on her way back to Ibadan, Oyo State from Lagos where they had been sent on a mission (as a bird) with two others when they missed their track, and started hovering in the area until it was morning, adding that she fell because she was tired.

According to eye-witnesses report three black birds were seen at about 7am, flying side-by-side along Old Ojo Road, when suddenly one of them landed on a moving pick-up van owned by Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

When the crowd finally gathered to catch a glimpse and question of the woman in her 80s she was discovered to have had a bruise on her forehead with which she landed.

One eyewitness said: “I have never seen this kind of incident in my life. I used to hear it, but this is terrifying. So these things truly happen? God will save and protect us”.

The woman was taken to the Baale of Ajeromi, where she reportedly confessed to killing her husband through witchcraft, after which she was taken away by the policemen from Layeni Police Division.

The crowd who trooped in their numbers at the Layeni Police Station were so uncontrollable that the officer in charge ordered the woman’s transfer to the Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

The Police Command spokesperson Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) who confirmed the incident said the police do not get involved in supernatural cases, advising people against taking laws into their hands.

She said: “The residents said they saw a bird that suddenly hit an electric pole and landed on the ground and turned to an old woman. They wanted to lynch her but she was rescued by operatives from Layeni Police Station who were on patrol. The residents besieged the police station and wanted to set it ablaze but were prevented. The woman is still in our custody and investigation is ongoing to ascertain where she was coming from and what she came to do in Lagos.”
